NAB Online Retail Sales Index: June 2025
Robust growth for online retail sales observed in June
- In June, on a seasonally adjusted basis, the NAB Online Retail Sales Index accelerated rapidly (2.6% mom) on the month prior (May slightly revised 0.8%, was 0.7%).
- Growth accelerated again in year-on-year terms (16.2% yoy) and continues to trend higher over the recent period.
- Growth accelerated for all categories in the month, except takeaway food, and grocery and liquor. Large sales category, homewares and appliances, which contracted in May, rebounded strongly in June, leading growth in the month by a fair margin, and contributed strongly to the overall result. Growth also accelerated for personal and rec goods, media, and department stores, while games and toys, and fashion slowed. In year-on-year terms, the department stores category continues to outpace other categories, albeit slowing slightly in June.
- All states recorded growth this month, with a strong rebound for the three states (SA, WA, TAS) that recorded a drop in the prior month, especially SA which led growth. There was also a strong acceleration for NSW, ACT, and QLD. The boost to growth for most states was from homewares and appliances, except TAS, where department stores and fashion were far stronger.
- While growth was recorded in both metro and regional areas, it accelerated in the former, with QLD factoring heavily in the result. WA on the other hand, was boosted by regional areas.
- Growth accelerated for domestic retailers in the month, with a slowdown for international.
- NAB estimates that in the 12 months to June, Australians spent $64.19 billion on online retail, a level that is around 14.5% of the total retail trade estimate (May 2025, Series 8501, Australian Bureau of Statistics), with the 12-months-to growth (13.5%) continuing to accelerate.
NAB Chief Economist, Sally Auld commented:
We observed robust growth for online retail sales in June (2.6% mom, s.a.), a stronger growth rate relative to our broader retail measure, the NAB Monthly Data Insights (0.9% mom). For online, the improvement in trend monthly growth has begun to bolster the annual growth rates, especially for domestic retailers. Our data also suggest that the online share of total retail continues to grow. Average spend also grew in the month for key growth categories, particularly homewares and appliances, and personal and recreational goods, where both volume of transactions and dollars spent increased. Alongside recent improvement in our broader retail measure, these data are consistent with our view that household consumption should improve as we move into the second half of the calendar year.
